A successful cooperation between PB Swiss Tools and the industrial designer Paolo Fancelli
There are some things, which disappear from the market as quickly as they arrive and there are other things, which remain on the market and stand out due to their fantastic design, such as the KeyDisco from PB Swiss Tools, for example.
The objects developed by Paolo Fancelli belong firmly in the second category: Whether hand tools for PB Swiss Tools, office chairs, Swiss Army knives, watches, medical appliances, garden shears or multi-purpose transporters, the Ticino-born industrial designer living in Zürich knows how to bring together functionality, esthetics, ergonomics in design in the best way possible.
In the past five years, Paolo Fancelli has developed several products for PB Swiss Tools, including T-handles, torque grips and the Bit carrying system.
His newest development, the KeyDisc for PB Swiss Tools, is prize-winning, just like so many objects before. The IF Hannover Design Aware 2010, as well as the Red Dot Design Award 2010, have praised the 46-year-old designer for developing a hex key L-wrench, which, thanks to its magnetic properties, pin hole and table stand, is ready to hand in every situation and can be effortlessly removed from the holder.
Paolo Fancelli explains the reasons for his prize-winning innovation work as follows: "I am fascinated by creating individual solutions from rational and affective elements. By perfectly linking functional and ergonomic requirements, I design strong product identities. The clear form language I use communicates the quality of the product. Because my products speak to the user, they are interactive elements of their daily lives."
As Fancelli follows the philosophy of the company commissioning him when developed his products, he sees himself as a spokesman for the company on the market. In this case, with PB Swiss, he understood his role in the development team as being a generalist with a global vision of the task. "This is where I so often find solutions that no-one expects," he says. "Because decisions in the development process more often than not range far and wide, my role of form designer is changing into being a company advisor in terms of design. The synergy between the business culture, design, technology and material resulting from this guarantees the product long-term success. That is why it's becoming part of the Swiss quality industry. Hopefully, this also applies to my newest creation, the KeyDisc."
The attitude of the designer is echoed by Eva Jaisli, CEO of PB Swiss Tools. "For us, design always comes after functionality. Nevertheless, the wonderful design in combination with the perfect feel of the material brings definite added value. A product with a well though-out design from PB Swiss Tools fulfils its purpose in a natural way, comes to hand intuitively and wins you over with its structural quality."
The awarding of the Red Dot Design prize in front of more than 1000 guests is planned for the 5th July 2010 in the Opera House of the European cultural capital, Essen. Nevertheless, the PB Swiss Tools teams would like to congratulate their designer Paolo Fancelli today!
