BikeTool: Endurance test in Latin America
"Discovering the fascinating world of Central and South America with the bicycle has fascinated us for some time. The bicycle gives us our own traveling speed, we can stop and drive on wherever we feel it is the most beautiful. We meet the inhabitants much more frequently compared to driving through by car or bus. As a result, we experienced the fine cuisine of Mexico, colorful markets in Guatemala, large banana plantations in Honduras while cycling. We enjoy spectacular volcanoes in Nicaragua, nature's beauty in the national parks of Costa Rica and the fabulous islands of the Caribbean coastline in Panama. In the end, we also experienced the unbelievable hospitality of the Colombians as well as the beautiful, albeit strenuous mountains in Ecuador.“ With this challenging tour, Martin and Evelyne have fulfilled a life's dream. In the meantime, the two arrived in Ecuador. And: On this trip, the new BikeTool from PB Swiss Tools is also subjected to an absolute endurance test. The idea for the BikeTool itself was born much earlier. Let's turn the wheel of time back – to the fall of 2009. At that time, the touring cyclist Martin Arnet approached PB Swiss Tools. "For every bicycle trip, whether it is on a Sunday afternoon or on a longer trip, there was always the question which repair material to bring along. I prefer "real" tools the most, including on the road. A regular hex key L-wrench simply fits better in the hand than one of the many other multi-tools that are available for bicycles. In 2009, when I compiled the suitable tools for a longer bicycle trip, I was looking for an option to use a commercial tool with as many functions as possible with a minimum weight. An adapter, with which I could use regular, standardized bits with a standard hex key L-wrench, seemed like a practical solution. There are already different systems with exchangeable bits. But either they require special bits, the handle part is too large or not suitable for the bicycle. A 5-mm hex key L-wrench appeared to be the best solution, since these screws are found most often on bicycles. After a few searches and inquiries at various companies, I realized that such an adapter did not yet exist. PB Swiss Tools was the only company that did not simply turn me down, but contacted me and manufactured a prototype.“ The simplicity of the tool and the use of standardized hand tools made it possible that PB Swiss Tools produced the first prototype within two days. Martin Arnet participated in the further development. His many years of experience as a biker are valuable for the product development. Further development: Two months later, it was possible to present the optimized prototype to a larger group of test persons. Valuable suggestions for improvement and positive feedback encouraged us to advance the project with high priority. During the entire development time, quality and material were continuously tested and market standards were checked. The results and findings entered into the development of the BikeTool. In the spring of 2010, the requirements for ergonomics and design were finalized. The collaboration with industrial designer Paolo Fancelli could begin. Functionality, robustness, small size and minimum weight are important characteristics that had to be combined in the BikeTool. In the fall of 2010, one year after the initial contact by Martin Arnet, the solution for the new product was ready. The manufacturing of the components could start in order to manufacture the preproduction series by the end of December 2010. We would like to thank Mr. Martin Arnet for his ingenious idea. We are proud to introduce a lightweight and compact BikeTool on the market. Transparent wood?
Rags and scraps of cloth were used as fiber raw materials for a long time. Paper manufacturing from wood did not start until the middle of the 19th century. In 1859, a process for "Increasing the strength of parchment paper" was patented in England. It was the start for the important development of modified natural substances based on cellulose. Cellulose nitrate was developed in England as the oldest moldable plastic that gained economic importance. It became world-famous under the name celluloid. The highly inflammable and the resulting inflammable nature motivated many researchers to develop other processes for manufacturing plastics from cellulose. As early as 1865, the manufacture of cellulose acetate (CA) from cellulose and acetic acid was successful. In 1919, the manufacture of molded parts from CA injection-molding compounds was patented. Cellulose acetate features the following properties, among other things: high strength and impact resistance high surface gloss, good non-slip property immune to scratches due to the high surface elasticity no stress cracking high transparency In the 1930s, cellulose mixed esters were developed in Germany and America which contained butyric acid in addition toe acetic acid. The new plastic cellulose aceto-butyrate (CAB) entered the market for injection molding in 1946. Compared with CA, CAB has: a higher strength, hardness and durability a better surface gloss a clearer transparency a higher UV resistance Since the first manufacture of PB Swiss Tools Classic handles in 1953, CAB has been used until now. Despite the fast development of plastics engineering, there still is no transparent material that is better suited for tool handles than CAB. Throughout the world, the Eastman Chemical Company in Kingsport, Tennessee, is the only manufacturer of CAB. The required cellulose was originally obtained from cotton. The increased demand for textiles and cigarette filters led to shortages and price increases. For this reason, the switch was made to conifers as raw material source. Today, three new trees are planted for every two trees taken down for the manufacture of cellulose plastics.

The mountain is calling: The Making of Pistenbully 2016
Location: Matterhorn, Switzerland. The Matterhorn (4478 meters above sea level) represents Switzerland like no other mountain. 150 years ago, it was climbed for the first time. Its distinctive appearance is known throughout the world – just like the international ski arena . On more than 360 kilometers of ski slopes, it offers wintry adventures for skiing and snow lovers from all countries. The Matterhorn accompanied us in the media in 2015 – and in 2016, it is at the center of our pictorial world. For this purpose, we took pictures at the Gornergrat and at the Trockener Steg. Pit stop after 600 operating hours. 34 vehicles belong to the Pistenbully fleet of Zermatt . During the winter season, they prepare 165 kilometers of ski slopes every day and consume 27 liters of diesel fuel per hour in the process. After 600 operating hours, it is time for maintenance – and this is the time when we come into play: With our Swiss precision tools, manual tasks can be performed even in extremely demanding environments and executed with efficiency and perfection. A screwdriver for breakfast
The solution lies in equalizing the pressure. Slightly lifting the lid off of the glass edge allows air to enter, the lid is "depressurized" and can be unscrewed. The use of fork or knife tips as a lever can quickly lead to their destruction. Spoon or fork handles are generally too thick to fit under the lid. They can also bend very easily. A special lid opener (vacuum lifter) is not always at hand. What now? A PB Swiss Tools flat-blade screwdriver size 4 or 3 proves to be the friend in need: The slim tip can easily be inserted between lid and glass. The ergonomically shaped nonslip handle provides sufficient force, even early in the morning, to turn the tip a little bit.
