Good products, good stories and loyalty
At the end of January, Eva Jaisli gave an interesting presentation on the topic of «Local positioning as a prerequisite for international success» at the university. For more than 138 years, PB Swiss Tools has been rooted in the Emmental and successfully conducts international business from its locations in Wasen and Sumiswald. In the early 70s, sales reached the demanding customers in Japan. How was that possible? Open countryside and happy cows «The products from the Swiss Emmental have always been 100-percent Swiss-made», Eva Jaisli says. In the land of the rising sun, the image of an nature and society was decisive for the lasting value of our brand products: The cows in the open countryside, the farmers who take care of them – those are the images disseminated about PB Swiss Tools by the tools dealer in his home country. They may correspond to a cliché – but they are effective: «It gives our customer in Tokyo an emotional entry to our brand and the values we represent:: uncompromising Swiss quality .» Important for the customer in Japan: The image of a rural idyll in the Emmental. Good stories will be passed on «Good stories will be passed on», Eva Jaisli explains. «They create an interest and communicate complex interactions in a simple way.» But it is not just the good stories that make our company successful, the core values durability, precision and reliability also serve this purpose. Our mission states that we want to make others successful – and the level of our quality standards underscores it. The swiss origin continues to be rated highly outside of Switzerland and is considered a promise for quality at many locations. Loyalty in the company as success factor For 45 years, PB Swiss Tools has been successfully selling products in Japan and for decades in 70 other countries throughout the world. «I am strongly convinced that outstanding entrepreneurial performance in the long term is possible only with mutual loyalty of employers and employees», Eva Jaisli emphasized. «As an entrepreneur, I am responsible for promoting the participation of the local population and its organizations in the social and economic life with fair hiring conditions, a meaningful corporate culture and the assignment of jobs in the region.» And who brings more motivation along than the people who are connected with the region and, for this reason, want to claim and maintain workplaces and apprenticeships for themselves and their descendants? In conclusion, Eva Jaisli pointed to the research work of the Geographical Institute of the University Bern concerning «Entrepreneurship in the rural area». It concludes that «rural» entrepreneurs support the rural community and region and demonstrate a lot of commitment when it comes to improving the location as a place of residence and the center of life for their skilled employees.

"Thanks to our heat pump, we save about 50,000 liter oil every year"
Martin Leuenberger, why was a decision made in favor of heat pumps? Sustainability is an important topic for our company. In the nearly twenty years I have been working here, I noticed again and again that the management is very intent on implementing improvements and optimizations for the protection of the environment and resources. This attitude is securely rooted in the company and continues at all levels. With the heat pump, we do not subject the environment do any pollution. For us, it has a tradition, so to speak: Max Baumann Senior wanted a heating system back then that did not produce smoke, and he had the first heat pump installed in 1979 – a pioneering venture at the time. Thanks to the heat pumps, we save about 50,000 'liter oil every year in both plants Heat pumps operate on current. Is it possible to also use synergies in the plant for this purpose Yes, we use waste heat from the machines for the operation. It is fed to a 100 cubic meter silo using cooling water and cooled by the heat pumps. In the process, heat is being generated for heating. We also use the waste heat of our compressors for heating. Since 2014, we have also received district heating from the local Wärmeverbund Energie AG Sumiswald. Aside from the heat pumps: What else does PB Swiss Tools do for sustainability? We conduct a rigorous energy management, e.g. by optimizing the peak load. With the system from Alpiq/Xamax, we optimize the use of energy and recognize savings potentials. In the context of energy consultation, the situation is constantly being re-assessed. A long-running success, as it were, is also the «Continuous Improvement Process», or simply CIP. For example, we were able to move a large part of the production and manufacturing to Grünen in order to have more space for final manufacturing, logistics, training as well as the attractive presentation of our products. Among other things, this resulted in improvements in the production sequences and significantly fewer trips between the plants. Not only is it economically beneficial, but it also serves the environment. Are additional measures being planned? If renovations are planned in the construction sector, we prefer sustainable solutions. I see another potential in the mobility sector by examining the use of electric vehicles between Wasen and Grünen. Whenever innovations are pending, we ask ourselves: How can we implement that as best as possible? We are openly in favor of innovative solutions and like to lead the way by setting a good example by not only talking about sustainability, but also act accordingly. Martin Leuenberger, thank you very much for the talk.

Splitting hairs
The permissible dimensional variations based on ISO standard for an Allen key of size 1.5 mm measures a mere 0.025 mm. This means that the dimension of the key must fall between 1.475 and 1.500 mm. A human hair measures between 0.04 and 0.1 mm. The image shows the relationship between the permissible dimensions for an Allen key size 1.5 mm and an average human hair with a thickness of 0.07 mm. Even for an Allen key of size 10 mm, the permissible deviations are less than the width of a hair. Our tools safely fit into the screws without any major play. We guarantee that the tolerances are maintained from the smallest to the largest Allen key. For the smallest dimensions of 0.71, 0.89 and 1.27 mm, the permissible deviations are so small that no nickel and chromium layers can be applied. For this reason, these tools are not delivered in chrome-plated design, but in black-finished design.
2-in-1 interchangeable blades – the trick with the power drill
One handle, one click, the interchangeable blade is securely engaged in the handle. The screwdriver in professional quality is ready for use. When fastening several screws, e.g. in wood or in plastic anchors, , hand and wrist will fatigue rapidly, even if the handle is highly ergonomical and fits well in the hand. A quick remedy would be a power drill and matching screwdriver bits. But wait ... just a power drill is already sufficient! The interchangeable blades can easily be clamped in the three-jaw chuck and become bits of type extra long. Caution: While Phillips, hexagon head or Torx screws can be used without problems, it is recommended to be particularly careful with slotted screws so that the screwdriver does not laterally slip out of the screw!
