Safety Tests | PB Swiss Tools
Better safe than sorry When working on live parts, safety is without doubt the most important prerequisite. This applies for the tools as well. In order to reduce the risk of an accident as far as possible, our tools have to pass nine important tests to meet the demanding standard of the VDE (Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies). If we discover a flaw, the tool or the entire series is scrapped. The tool with VDE label only reaches your workplace after it has passed all of the tests. We differentiate between random sample testing and routine testing. During the latter, every single item is 100% tested for errors. We would like to present some of these tests here. Because you can rely on our tools – without fail. 100% insulated Electrical insulation is essential when working with electricity. This is why we test every single one of our VDE tools in a special water quench through which a 10 kV current flows. The current is conducted to the tool’s insulation for 10 seconds in the water quench. It may not be electrically penetrated. We also prolong this test to three minutes during random sample testing. Visual check Every PB Swiss Tools VDE tool undergoes a visual check. A qualified specialist hereby checks the insulation and handles in particular. Labels must be legible and include the designation of origin as well as the year the model was released. By the way, we perform a different test to ensure the labels last a long time. Measurement check We are also very fussy when it comes to dimensions. Our specialists check compliance with the requirements an the VDE-tested tool using a vernier caliper. The uninsulated tip may not be longer than 18 mm and we also check the exact thickness of the insulation. Chill out We test our tools in an impact test to ensure they remain safe, even in extremely cold conditions. We begin by leaving the tool in a freezer at -40° for two hours. A predefined weight is then allowed to fall on the insulation three times in succession. No cracks should then be visible. Unyielding High torques may occur when working with a screwdriver. The tip of the tool in particular has to withstand these torques. We test this in a special device. The tool is clamped in this and subjected to high stresses. The test is deemed to have been passed if the mechanical requirements of the corresponding ISO standards are met. Tested for heat Electric current is also a potential source of ignitions. This is why we also test the flammability of our VDE tools. To this end, the tool is clamped horizontally over a flame. The test has been passed if the flame at the tool does not exceed 120 mm in height for 20 seconds.
Surgical techniques – PB Swiss Tools
Surgical technique Four screw extraction methods Extracting screws requires experience and expertise. The OPERACE instrument set may be used only by trained operators. Applications 1. Removal of intact screws. 2. Removal of screws with a damaged screw recess. 3. Removal of locking head screws stuck in the plate. 4. Removal of broken screws and of screws processed according to procedure 3. Important The correct instrument sizes to remove screws must be carefully chosen to facilitate screw extraction and to reduce the risk of further screw damage during the procedure. Supplementing the information in this manual, instruction in the surgical use of these instruments by a surgeon experienced in their handling is strongly recommended. Surgical techniques & brochure

When stored in airtight containers such as drawers and tool cases, handles made from the modified natural cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) substance develop an unpleasant odor. The development of an odor is not linked to the material properties, i.e. the product remains qualitatively sound in terms of its functionality. To neutralize the odor, we add a discreet vanilla fragrance to our CAB handles. VDE and Electronic Screwdrivers What are VDE screwdrivers? Screwdrivers with a VDE label are insulated hand tools. They have been specially designed for use in high-risk applications with electricity and electrical currents. All VDE screwdrivers must meet the strict safety requirements set out by the Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies (VDE). What does the IEC number on VDE screwdrivers represent? This is a type approval in line with the international IEC standards. The approval is only issued once the VDE screwdriver successfully passes the mechanical and electrical safety tests carried out by the testing institute. Do the VDE screwdrivers produced by PB Swiss Tools undergo testing that is more stringent than the VDE specifications? We subject all of our newly produced series to various tests that are specified by the standard. For example, all of the new VDE screwdrivers undergo visual testing, flammability testing and impact testing. We also test each of our products individually in a water quench. We carry out further tests at random on each series. When should I use an insulated tool? You should use an insulated tool for your own protection when working on live objects at voltages of up to 1000 VAC/1500 VDC. VDE screwdrivers made from non-conductive materials guarantee the highest level of safety – particularly if there is a risk of electric shock – as they meet the requirements set out by the Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies. In what way is a screwdriver insulated? VDE screwdrivers feature insulation made from plastic that extends all the way to the blade. This reduces the risk of an electric shock. Most users do not want to have to do without this added value. How do I change the test lamp in my voltage tester? Due to a standard that entered into force in 2005, test lamps are no longer permitted to be changed. Since this changeover, voltage testers have had to be supplied in such a way that they can be disassembled without being destroyed. The result of this is that the components can no longer be replaced. Torque Handles What is the difference between calibration and adjustment? Adjusting is where a comparative measurement is carried out on the tool and if there is a deviation, the torque tool is recalibrated. During the calibration process, only a comparative measurement that provides evidence of the accuracy of the tool is carried out. How often should I calibrate my torque screwdriver? We recommend recalibrating once per year or after 5000 uses. Can I have my torque screwdriver recalibrated by PB Swiss Tools? We can carry out recalibrations with adjustments. However, as we are not an accredited test center, it is not possible to reset the tool to national standards. How much does it cost to have a recalibration/adjustment performed by PB Swiss Tools? Recalibration including adjustment costs CHF 50.00 net per item and applies for all of the torque tools produced by PB Swiss Tools. You must bear the shipping costs. I would like to calibrate my torque screwdriver myself. Does PB Swiss Tools also offer test devices? We do not sell any torque sensors. If you are looking for a cost-effective handheld device, we recommend devices produced by Brütsch/Rüegger and SFS if you are in Switzerland. International recommendations can be provided upon request. Why did my torque screwdriver fail an external test? PB Swiss Tools carries out a factory calibration for every torque tool in accordance with the latest DIN EN ISO 6789:2017 standard. This includes a release aligned exactly with a defined continuous rotational speed. All PB Swiss Tools torque tools can be adjusted using a suitable measuring system. We recommend adjusting and calibrating the tools once per year, regardless of their use. Should a torque tool not meet the calibration requirements, the tool can be readjusted and recalibrated. The steps required to do so are set out in the instruction for use for your tool. How long will the button cell battery in my torque screwdriver last? The service life of a button cell battery is approximately two to three years. This is heavily dependent on the number of times it is used and the environmental conditions. The power consumption is much lower with a closed cap than when the cap is pulled back (adjustment mode). How can I adjust and calibrate my torque screwdriver? The instructions on how to do this are available in our instructions for use and various videos. To access these, visit the Media Service in the Support area of our website. “LO” or “HI” is visible on the display of my Digi Torque V02. What do these mean and what do I need to do? “LO” or “HI” are displayed if the torque range for which the respective Digi Torque V02 is designed is fallen below or exceeded by more than 5%. If “LO” is visible on the display, turn the cap to the right until the display shows values again. If “HI” is visible, turn the cap to the left. An empty battery is not a production error and can be replaced easily. The button cell battery required is the commercially available 3V CR-1/3N type. Striking tools I cannot remove the plastic inserts from my mallet. What do I need to do? Watch this video to find out how to replace your polyamide mallet insert quite easily. If the insert sits firmly on the mallet to such an extent that the handle threatens to break during loosening, we recommend the following: Use a hacksaw to saw as far as possible into the front of the insert. Then continue the saw cut on the side all the way up to the body (metal body). If this does not help, drive a chisel into the saw cut to split the insert in two. This is the latest time at which the insert can be removed. What does “recoilless” mean and what advantages does it provide to mallets? Our mallets are “recoilless”. This means that a set of disks inside the mallet body effectively absorbs the impact of the mallet stroke and thus prevents the mallet from recoiling. This makes your work more accurate, more pleasant and effortless. If you use your mallet for a wide range of purposes, your best bet is to choose the version with replaceable heads. Find out more about our history – and the transformation from village blacksmith to pioneer. 1878 1878 Everything began in a village blacksmith’s shop The history of PB Swiss Tools began in 1878 in a village blacksmith’s shop in Wasen, in the heart of the Swiss region of Emmental. A wide range of metal objects were produced here – from nose rings for restraining oxen to field mice traps and watch chains. 1918 1918 From initials to the company name In 1918, Paul Baumann assumed control of the family business, which had an outstanding reputation for its ironware. The brand name PB Swiss Tools was later derived from his initials. 1939 1939 Pioneering work during World War Two During World War Two, Paul Baumann carried out some pioneering work. Together with his son Max Baumann senior, he developed various robust hand tools for the Swiss Armed Forces. 1945 1945 A period of economic upswing After World War Two, the new high-quality tools were met with a thriving market within the industry and trade segments. The first industrial building was constructed in Wasen during this time. 1953 1953 Innovative and sustainable An injecting molding process that was at the time unheard of in Europe was used to manufacture the red, transparent screwdriver handles. The raw material for the handles is called CAB (cellulose acetate butyrate) and is not made from oil, but from a renewable resource – wood. The materials left over in production are shredded and added back to the base. 1955 1955 Social safeguards PB Baumann GmbH was one of the first employers to launch a staff pension fund for its growing workforce. They took on monotonous tasks and ensured the continued growth of the company. Employees were also able to benefit from this, as they could now dedicate themselves to a wide range of tasks. 1992 1992 New traceability PB Swiss Tools has been manufacturing products with a lifetime guarantee for decades. To ensure that the tools can be traced, they have had a unique serial number etched onto them using a laser since 1992. This number is in turn saved in a database. She previously held a wide range of management functions and has a degrees in social sciences. The prerequisites for gaining this certification include having a company environmental policy and carrying out a critical review and survey of processes with respect to environmental criteria. The new system comprising a VDE interchangeable handle & VDE slim interchangeable blades is particularly impressive due to the click system and the color-coding system.
